Style & Speeches: Great Speeches in Shakespeare
In this unit, we'll study great rhetorical moments in Shakespeare, expanding on Chapter 1 of LOC by practicing Close Reading and analyzing microscopic skills, covered in Chapter 2. First, we'll delve into LOC's treatment of John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address, using the famous speech as a model for you to analyze famous rhetoric dealing with war and peace. Then, we'll study the rhetoric of some of Shakespeare's most important characters: Brutus and Mark Antony, Claudius, Lady Macbeth, Falstaff, Henry V, Iago, and Kate & Petruchio. As we read, we'll discuss what makes a "good" leader, reviewing a selection from Machiavelli's The Prince. We'll end with sample AP multiple choice and rhetorical analysis questions.
