Gents: Today in class, we did the following:
For next class: Read Sarah Vowell's "The Partly Cloudy Patriot" (LoC page 1057). You'll be expected to use this on the persuasion part of your essay on the exam.
Speaking of the exam, here are some details:
Last item: All of the due dates from the last blog remain... here's a new one: All blogs are due by Friday. If you've been behind on them, you'll need to finish them by 12/19. You'll still earn partial credit (Better than a zero, eh?)
- I collected Quarter 2 projects...congratulations!
- You completed your last Microscopic Skills Exercise of the semester (focusing on metaphors in King's letter)
- Y'all met in your groups for five-ten minutes to review.
- We enjoyed our last seminar discussion of the year to analyze the text and to prepare for the persuasion essay part of your exam. A2 Notes (Word); B2 Notes (Word)

Speaking of the exam, here are some details:
- Persuasion Essay: This will assess your argumentation skills (argument / claim, evidence, counterargument, avoidance of fallacies, analysis of assumptions) and your understanding of the texts in this unit (On the Duty of Civil Disobedience, Letter from Birmingham Jail, "On the Rainy River," Kohlberg's Moral Development States, "Small Change" by Gladwell, Safe House, and Vowell's essay)
- Rhetorical Analysis: This will assess your understanding of rhetorical strategies. I'll provide a text you've never seen before, and you'll have to demonstrate understanding of the author's argument and strategies on the microscopic and larger level (using Joliffe). This will include written response, multiple choice, or both.
