Gents: In today's class, we had a joyful exploration of openings, particularly for our study of Heart of Darkness. We did the following:
- Discussed the opening / basic plot of the novella.
- Watched each of the clips below, analyzing them for the tone / mood they create and the themes that they set up for the rest of the film (setting the table for the rest of the meal)
- Read the opening of Heart of Darkness, analyzing the text closely to establish the narrator's ideas about Britain / the British Empire, the narrator's retort as a lead-up to his story.
- Did some writing (Microscopic Skills #6) in regards to creating a dark, foreboding tone / mood.
- Finally, spent some further time reviewing "Dumpster Diving" and "Making Yourself a Character"

For homework, please read Heart of Darkness (part I if you haven't started, part II if you want to look ahead) and work on your personal narrative (B2: Your first draft will be due on Wednesday; A2: Yours is due on Tuesday). Here's an online text (link) for Heart of Darkness.
